Not enjoyable writing at all
I just couldn't connect with the writing style/voice at all.Gave up fairly quickly.Uninteresting.Disappointing given the reviews.

Superbly written and observed
Brilliant writing with great insights into ordinary people and life's problems.Strout is one of my favourite authors writing books I enjoy reading again and again.

Writing style and characters not engaging
Despite great reviews , the writing style and voice left me cold.Gave up early on, the characters not drawing me in at all.Didn't enjoy the jumping about style in terms of time; that can work well but I didn't think it was skilfully done in this novel.
