  I got it to work! It turns out the metal ring around the gas-filling nozzle has two tiny notches for inserting a miniature screwdriver; if it is set too tightly, the gas is too low to light. If it is set too loosely, the force of the gas rushing out extinguishes the flame. It is very sensitive, but this lovely lighter CAN be made to work - thanks so much to the excellent seller!
