On the sole of the Yellow Lightning 4s are black areas textured with fun zig-zag and distinctive dotted shapes with splotches of white. Also located on the heel of the sole is another famous Jumpman silhouette, which is raised in yellow.

The Yellow Lightning's Place in the Air Jordan 4 Line
The original Yellow Lightning Jordan 4s are a part of the third generation of the Air Jordan 4 lineup. The first generation of Jordan 4s debuted in 1989 and was designed by Nike Jordan designer Tinker Hatfield. In the beginning, the Jordan 4 line was inspired by the lifestyle look of the Jordan 3s but differed in that they featured a more utilitarian style with mesh underlays. The first four models of the Jordan 4 line are Black Cement, White Cement, Military Blue, and Fire Red. Michael Jordan himself wore a custom pair of Jordan 4s when he performed "The Shot" against the Cleveland Cavaliers on May 7, 1989.
The second generation of Air Jordan 4s 1999 and were the first of the line to include the Jumpman logo. In 2005 and 2006, a third generation of the shoes dropped with Jordan 4 Laser editions, the Yellow Lightning edition, and the Red Thunder edition. The Yellow Lightning edition of the shoe was notably inspired by the colors of Micheal Jordan's motorsports team. After 2006, multiple retro versions of the Jordan 4 shoes were released, including the Jordan 4 Retro Yellow Lightnings of 2021.
