Wood Carving: Projects and Techniques by Chris Pye is an excellent book for the intermediate to advanced wood carver. Chris is an excellent writer as well as a talented wood carver and artist. The book is a compilation of wood carving projects that had been written up by Chris Pye in Woodcarving magazine. The projects selected provide different types of learning as they offer new challenges to the wood carver, moving from a comfort zone into new territory. For the beginning wood carver acquiring Pye's other books are really in order. One can truly learn to carve by reading and working with Pye's books, starting with his "Woodworking Tools, Materials & Equipment", then onto his wonderful "Relief Carving in Wood", then to "Elements of Woodcarving". His book "LETTERCARVING IN WOOD" is really an excellent course in letter carving with Chris carefully guiding one along. "Carving on Turning" is directed towards teaching the wood carver how to add carved decoration to turned/lathe work. Taken together this small library can teach nearly anyone who is willing to put in the time how to wood carve. Chris Pye's wonderful method of explanation very quickly becomes a great source for building ones knowledge and confidence. If one is serious about learning and is willing to put in the time, then these books may be all that one needs to become a skilled wood carver.Read full review
