VERY tricky to germinate! I now understand why the plants are so expensive an hard to find in stores! I've gotten 1 to the point of feeding it live 'wrigglers', but it can't catch it's own (yet), invest in a good set of long tweezers if you're squeamish like me. i began with bits of raw hamburger, but had to tie it on thread to wiggle it enough to trigger the trap to close. we've now graduated to fruit fly larvae. Which is exactly why I wanted the traps - for the adults! Can't tolerate tap water though, you NEED distilled!!

I'm an experienced gardener and get seeds from many sources. I always hedge a bit when buying seeds from China as all too often I don't get what I was expecting or the viability is poor. In this case they have a fantastic photo of the Venus Fly Trap on the cover of the seed packet. However, flytrap seeds are black and oblong. The seeds in these packets were manilla and triangular. I noticed the English writing on the reverse of the packet that says "Latin name: Gypsophila elegans" What?! That's the scientific name for Baby's Breath. The big kicker - these aren't Baby's Breath seeds either, as I know what those look like. So for $1 you get a packet of mystery seeds with a nice photo of what you wish you were growing. :)

I don't use potting soil because they like a nutrient poor medium. I use a mixture of sphagnum moss and perlite. I read on here that some people don't think that it is really venus flytrap. Too early to tell. Something is growing.
