[Note: English captions, spoken language is Hungarian] Sad! Depressing! Even morbid! NOT FOR CHILDREN or teens under 18, or even sensitive squeamish adults!!! Very graphic, even gory, depictions of the horrible cruelty and suffering inflicted on Hungarian street dogs by thoroughly despicable humans---starting with the girl’s dog hating father (who she’s staying with while her mother is on an overseas business trip) dumping her dog, Hagan, out of the car onto a busy highway!! He repeatedly prevents her from searching for her dog every time she runs away to find him!!! (If you’ve ever seen a PETA undercover video of factory farm cruelty---consider this movie’s graphic scenes worse!!!) Hagan joins a large group of stray street dogs for a while then is captured and recaptured various times by various humans who inflict cruelty and injury on him and some of the other strays even killing some!! The depictions of the dogs’ retaliation on all the humans who inflicted cruelty on them are unwatchable—you have to cover your eyes!!!! The ending scene where the girl finds her dog along with all the street dogs in a meat packing plant is surprisingly peaceful as Hagen, who had forgotten the girl in his ordeal, finally remembers her, and all the other dogs follow his lead and lie down calmly with him. But it is sadly a bittersweet ending with the fade out to Hungarian words for ‘The End’--- because commonsense tells the viewer what the fate of the dogs would be if it were not fiction! I don’t know what criteria is used by the Cannes Film Festival, but how this film could win any award is beyond me since this movie's graphic cruelty makes the WWII story “The Great Escape” look like a kid’s film! Worst of all is how were the dozens or hundreds of real life canine actors, all former ‘shelter dogs’, trained??? Two dogs played Hagan and I could easily tell the difference between them. Remember the American Humane Association that monitors all animal scenes filmed inside the U.S. is NOT in Hungary!!! No idea if Hungary has any such animal protection organization! The credits say homes were found for all those dogs used in the movie; but that does not answer about the training methods used or whether any were injured in the filming!!! Read full review
