I was torn on what rating to give this movie, should I go for "Good" or "Very Good" (as you can see, I plumped for "Good") This is a true story crime thriller/drama movie about two childhood friends Brian and Paulie who end up working as wiseguys from a young age. This is a movie of two halves, the first half is a crime movie tracking the exploits of Brian and Paulie as they run errands for their bosses, Paulie wanting to break away and do more jobs for themselves (bringing more money), Brian ending up a drug addict thanks to him getting into the drug business. This half of the film is very interesting and entertaining. The middle part of the movie ends up with the two friends being caught and sent to prison for five years, then (for me at least) the movie changes gears and falls apart somewhat. Once Brian gets out of Jail, the movie switches to his struggle to stay on the straight and narrow for the sake of his wife and kids. This is just too much of a change of pace from the first half of the movie and makes everything feel a little disjointed, almost as if two movies were smushed together to make one long film (Not that the film is long, clocking in at around 96 minutes.) I also found this with "Australia" that felt like two movies made into one, That however WAS a very long film (around 3 hours) So the first half of the movie is a solid **** the second is a not so solid *** and since it ended that way, I'm going for "Good" but not "Great" but the performance from Mark Ruffalo was indeed "Great" he owned the film.Read full review
Great movie with some solid acting from Danny Whalberg and Ethan Hawke, one of those movies that takes you up the garden path and leaves you suprised in a magic forest! (Not literally) Great conclusion with morality and family values winning out. Very enjoyable.
