I bought several of these flash units after becoming interested in modern flash photography as described on websites like "Strobist." These units have a high trigger voltage which means they must be modified if they are to be used with digital cameras, otherwise the camera will most likely be damaged. Anyone considering one of these units must realize that it won't be ideal if automatic operation is required. I chose the 2000 because it's a fairly compact unit, it's readily available, and because the "Vivitar" brand name meant reasonable quality back when these were made. Compactness was important because I intend to use these units in pairs for macro photography. I modified several units using a circuit commonly available on the Internet, and parts from ebay. I also added potentiometers which makes light output continuously adjustable. The 2000 is a consumer grade flash, but it seems to be reliable. One of my units was recently used as a fill flash for about 200 portrait shots. It performed well with one set of batteries. Light output is adequate for most situations, but for large rooms and/distances, a larger more powerful unit is recommended. It does have one weakness -- the hotshoe is cheaply made and fails to function when two metal pieces within are not making physical contact. Not hard to fix, but frustrating. The unit is easy to disassemble and reassemble, if one is slow and methodical about routing wires etc. I recommend these units for the purposes I described, but you must enjoy tinkering with the unit if you are to be happy with it. From a value standpoint, these will be a great buy if used on an old film camera that can tolerate the high trigger voltage, or for a person who will enjoy the modification process. You'll end up with a very versatile flash, in that it can be adjusted to give you the ideal amount of light for a given situation (within the unit's limitations of course) which allows the photographer to use it a a supplement to available light. One final note -- be aware that the 2000B is not the same unit. It's a cheaper flash without an auto thyristor circuit, something that's essential if you are planning to make an adjustable output flash.Read full review
It works just fine. The Vivitar 2000 shoe Mount Flash is an excellent buy for the price. It's great for those of you getting started in photography to those of you who've already acquired some skills and knowledge in taking pictures.
A great simple little flash. It works with EVERY film camera I own with an accessory shoe; hot or cold. Syncs well, and works great in "Auto" mode. A little bounce would be great, but for this price, you can't beat this little flash.
