I lost my original copy of this book (or lent it and was not returned). For lack of space I try to only keep books that warrant rereading, of which this is one. It takes about 100 pages to get into it and then your perseverance is paid off—magnificent prose coupled with mystery and expert use of two time periods. Skip the ghastly movie version (or at least don’t compare it to the book). Jennifer Ehle and Jeremy Northam are undeniably good, as is an almost unrecognizable Lena Headey, in the Victorian storyline. Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart (both of whom I like in other films) are miscast as contemporary scholars.

Interesting and complelling tale of a woman poet's adventure that goes beyond merely her, affecting the lives of all who read about her It has interesting psychological and even mythical overtones. Was mentioned in Eve, by Pamela Norris, which is why I bought it.
In looking for a birthday present for my roommate, I came to find out that there were two books she was reading in class that she absolutely wanted. This was one of them. I'm so glad to have found it!
I saw the movie first so I wanted to read the book. The book was really good and it was ini excelent condition.
