When buying one of these type of lasers, you have to understand there will be some modifications you NEED to do and some you may WANT to do. NEED: 1. Rewire the exhaust fan if you plan to use it. The wiring in the one I received was only moderately better than the deathtrap versions I've seen in YouTube videos. 2. Square the gantry. My gantry came all out of whack. Not bent, mind you. Just that I needed to remove the front cover over the stepper motor, loosen the coupler and adjust the gantry till it was square. 3. Remove the hold open latch. I quickly realized that the hold open latch sticks down so far that the gantry runs into it, ruining engravings that go beyond the point that the latch hangs down and making the belt skip. 4. Check mirror alignment. Mine appears to have come perfectly aligned, even after fixing the gantry alignment, but I still checked. WANT: 1. Add air assist. It's almost a necessity, but you can get by without it as long as you aren't cutting things that are too flammable and you keep your lenses clean. 2. Also almost a necessity... Remove the crappy bed. I removed mine and put a 4 inch lab jack in its place. I'll be adding magnets to the bottom and a perforated steel plate to the top with some pointy standoffs. Overall, the general quality seems pretty good. The top panel is a bit flimsy and doesn't quite line up when closed. The tubing for water could stand to be a bit longer. The switches are rediculously linked. You can't turn on the lights without the emergency switch on, the main switch on and the laser switch on... Not to mention the actual light switch. I knew what I was getting into and I'm happy with it despite the changes that needed to be made.Read full review

I bought one of these while waiting for the funds to replace my 80 watt laser. they don’t come with air assist and to add it you have to cut the metal exhaust shroud. the control board and dongle limit you to some pretty crappy software if you don’t already have corel draw. $500 design software. you can however either buy a grbl controller already set up for this machine or program your own on an ardrino board. the clamp thing in the non adjustable floor is crap. and the lense sucks the black over brass plates i engraved with this came out sloppy. if you are just wanting something cheap to play around with the milliwatt lasers would be a better way to go. if you want to cut stuff. get an 80 watt or bigger and enjoy it a lot more.

Over all pretty happy with this machine. If you purchase one, watch the YouTube videos on recommended upgrades. The upgraded control panel is nice. Fix the wiring in the exhaust fan before using. If you don't know how, find someone who does. I replaced the entire cord on the fan and put a new plug on the water pump. Make sure after you make the adjustments to the mirrors that you clean them properly. I burned a hole in the first mirror in a week. Biggest problem I have had is the exhaust fan. The fit is terrible. I am still working this issue trying to find a fix. Overall I am happy with my purchase. Take your time and learn the system. Watch videos and read articles on it.

This laser has a 600mm length laser tube, not a 700mm one that many other 40w lasers have. That being said, the machine and laser have worked well for me. It is not the type of machine you’ll want to use straight out of the box as it requires a lot of fine tuning and modifications to truly be useful for many applications. You can find a lot of resources online to help you since this machine is so popular.

Simply put, this is a 40w CO2 laser, a cabinet, cnc control board, power supply, motors, belts, tracks, and mirrors. If only half of it worked, it'd be a good deal. Luckily for me it all worked flawlessly and I was able to make my first "cut" within an hour of opening the box. I used inkscape and k40 whisperer rather than the supplied software. Super impressed with how much power this thing has versus what my old 5w diode engraver could do.
