Don Dokken's solo project, emerging after the first split-up of George Lynch and Dokken, is a very meticulously produced record and has all the passion that comes with serious, sincere metal effort. Ex-Europe guitarist John Norum shines on most of the tracks, and Don's vocals were never better. The lyrical quality is mostly satisfying, other than a couple of songs that I found to be obvious fillers, such as 'Living A Lie' and 'When Love Finds A Fool'. Rocks hard on tracks like 'Crash n Burn', 'The Hunger', 'Give It Up', 'Stay' and '1000 Miles Away'. Overall this is an album that I would have on the proverbial desert island as one of my only 10... check it out
Every song on Up From The Ashes is Awesome! He, Don Dokken, has a very powerful, unique and beautiful voice. I absolutely love to listen to it over and over again up loud! I have been a Dokken fan since 1983 and wish the rock stations had played their music more often. I purchased two Up From The Ashes cds so when the first one wears out, I will have a 2nd one immediately on hand!
To be honest, I thought Dokken was pretty much washed up after 'Back for the Attack', but I was wrong. This album rocks, and sounds a lot like 'Under Lock and Key', even with the all new band members behind Don. His voice sounds great still, and the addition of a second guitar play (dual axes) is nice. Maybe not as good as George Lynch was, but with two of them, it's hard to say. If you liked all the previous albums, then you'll like this one as well. :-)
