I've been a fan of Tron since my first viewing. It's really just a classic, with enough symbolism and layering to give it good rewatch potential. The overall style has been said to be dated, but it's done so creatively that I've never had an issue with the old CGI. This really was a star in the sky of Disney's innovative era, which I think was their greatest period (even if sales seemed to say otherwise).

The new TRON Legacy could never compare to the original TRON. Unlike TRON legacy, The characters are Good actors. Its to be expected, however the special features are pretty bland, and full of hidden truths. TRON is a common computer programming language term,, it was NOT conceived by the writers, as they claim.. Just one example of their lies.

Tron has a great premise with a great story and was actually cast pretty well in the early 80's (1982) - The visuals were way ahead of it's time and the game Tron (released by Bally Midway) was my favorite game as a child in the era of arcades. I just watched this movie again a few nights ago. I had forgotten how cheesey the film actually was. The concepts were certainly different than any other movie before it, but now I see that the writing of the screenplay is where the movie really failed. With modern special effects and renewed interest in gaming - this should be a no brainer for a remake. The movie is about a hacker named Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) who is physically transported into a surreal world of computing and gaming by an ego maniacal server called "The Master Control Program". The movie follows Flynn's adventures in this "world" to stop the MCP and reppace him with a safety program called Tron. The movie could be made much more plausible if Flynn were instead plugged into the Master Control Program's "world" Matrix style. * I play a 3D Tron light cycle game on my Mac on a weekly basis...you can download it for free for Mac or PC ... just Google for GL Tron * I have the movie poster from this film which I consider one of my favorites as far as artwork: * Since this movie is also a Disney property ... I see this movie making a great ride experience at Disney theme parks. Could you imagine a light cycle roller coaster?Read full review
Okay, so Tron isn't the best cast movie, nor is it in anyway a good, complex plot. But, it was made when people thought that these new computers were going to rule the world someday (well some people think this is true today), and the graphics... can't beat em :) I bought this movie for two reasons. One, it' a computer classic, and I will be DJing for a computer event this month - I thought it would be fun to run it in the background. Two, for my own edification. I watched this movie when I was in middle school, so it's a bit nostalgic for me. For anyone who has not seen the movie, I say see it. But you aren't going to be thinking about it for days on end like other movies.
I bought the TRON 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition the week that the new TRON: Legacy movie was released in theaters. I wanted to re-watch the original before going to see the new film. I couldn't find it anywhere, to rent or buy, but like the saying goes "I found it on eBay". It was "The Matrix" before "The Matrix", conceptualizing programs as human-like and creating a vast "Grid" with builings and terrain features that the programs existed and interacted on. B+
