Many Troma fans will debate this movie and the 3rd part of the Toxie Trilogy forever. Some will say that it can't compete with the original installment in the series, mainly because of it's extreme campiness and alterations to Toxie's voice. This movie (while not necessarily suited for children) is what helped evolve Toxie towards that animated character remembered from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon. I, personally, enjoy all three films from the original trilogy, despite the changes to Toxie and the push towards a younger audience. Part 2 and 3 were intended to be one film, but were split up because the film would have ran 4 hours; I suppose that Lloyd Kaufman & Michael Herz knew that not even the Tromaholics could handle that much Toxie, let alone the new fans. Part Two of the Toxic Avenger has Toxie battling the vicious Apocalypse Inc. as they attempt to take over Tromaville. Lloyd Kaufman states in the commentary on the Unrated Director's Cut that Apocalypse Inc. was inspired by the concept of Reaganomics and corporate America's overwhelming desire for greed. During the film, Toxie windsurfs to Japan to find his long missing father and learns the art of sumo. Surprisingly, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz took the film to the REAL Japan, rather than building a crappy set. In my opinion, this is what makes the film special. Mr. Kaufman, the creator of Toxie, had a real vision for his character and made sure this film was not just a rehash of the previous Toxic Avenger. Filming in Shinjuku, Japan (made famous by Takashi Miike) is what allows this film to stand on it's own. You don't have to see the original to enjoy the sequel, which makes it a film all it's own. If Battle of Love's Return was his Reservoir Dogs and the Toxic Avenger was his Pulp Fiction, then Toxie part 2 & 3 would be Mr. Kaufman's Kill Bill. Try all three films; they're chock full of campy goodness, bloody gore, pretty 1980's girls & more action than you could shake a stick at. -Matthew Merz.Read full review
