You need this book.
I bought this book when I got into gardening. It's great! Felder is a compelling writer and a relaxed gardener. I found I have a natural talent for gardening, and this book only helped me do even better. This book basically teaches you to plant what works well. Like he says, if you plant what works, people will think you really know what your doing. Lol! He also talks about the myth of the "five dollar hole". If a plant is going to thrive you don't need to put a lot of money into preparing a hole for a plant. I can't stand reading boring material with missionary position-like instructions on how to garden. Felder makes gardening fun, and you will be a better gardener by reading this book because of that fact alone. I laughed hysterically at his descriptive writing while I drank a beer lounging after a long hot day in the garden. If you keep a sharp shooter shovel in the trunk of your car at all times, if you find yourself checking out your handy work in the garden with a flashlight at 11 at night, or if you spend all day in the garden forgetting to eat then you got it bad like me! This is the book for all of us who are tired of the "latest, greatest, must-have plants" that often cost us a fortune and perform miserably in our gardens. Felder Rushing writes like your best gardening buddy would talk to you sitting under a tree, sharing his vast knowledge of these trouble-free, proven plants for us Southern gardeners. The plants he recommends will change my garden forever, and in a very positive way. Pour up a tall glass of sweet tea, wiggle down real comfortable in your lawn chair under your favorite tree and enjoy this hilarious look at Southern gardening.

Great pictures and advice. But lacked planting zone information. Southern is a very broad category for this author. He considers south anything below the Mason Dixon line
