In this consumer culture parody, professional wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper plays an unemployed working stiff who finds a pair of sunglasses that let him see the world as it truly is. Billboards that carry subliminal messages such as 'Submit to Authority' and tv shows that carry the same messages are controlled by Aliens who are disquised as 'yuppies'. Problem here is that the Aliens are bent on subduing the human race by this manner. Upon discovering this - Piper enlists the help of an assistant-who does not believe it until he see it also-and they grabs up the guns and start blasting the aliens-seeking to help people see the truth. This is Pipers best acting job-ever. And outside of the WWE (wrestling series) type movies-he has never repeated this effort. Director here is John Carpenter ( Vampires, Escape from L.A., Starman, The Thing, etc) does a respectable job here of directing an easy to follow movie with alot of action-and gets a surpriseing effort out of Piper and Keith David. This movie was a big box - office hit in 1988, and although the special efforts are not to todays standards-for the era the movie was made-they are very special and top notch. This movie will certainly be enjoyed by lovers of Sci-fi and fantasy sci-fi--and the movie is somewhat one of a kind, and made to the book by Carpenter by the same name. Good movie that most people will enjoy and will give a good nights entertainment too.Read full review
An excellent film that encapsulates the theme in many of John Carpenter's narratives. "They Live" is a poignant critique of the ills that plague modern day society with a particular focus on our consumerist culture. The movie is sick! I love it. Roddy Piper is fantastic. Many of his lines are ad-libbed. The best of course being, "It's time to kick ass and chew bubble-gum and I'm all out of bubble-gum." This movie also has the longest fist-fight scene in cinema history clocking in at nearly eight minutes long. It is too bad that Roddy Piper did not have more big screen roles in his career. If you are looking for an awesome eighties B-rated movie. This is it. But if you are expecting top notch box office blockbuster look elsewhere.
Great movie! It's a little comical to see "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as a main character but he plays a great role. Another classic by John Carpenter. I have a tendency to look into things a little different myself and it was refreshing to watch a movie with a different view on things in the world. Highly recommend watching

This is a classic in the Sci-fi world and when I first saw it in pieces on hulu over a dial-up internet connection. I knew I wanted it. It is so apropo to what is happening in society now. The subliminal messages are everywhere now just like in the movie. The crackdown by a militant police force on the revolutionaries and innocent bystanders is typical now. These revolutionaries are trying to wake people up to what is really going on in their world. Roddy Piper does a good job of changing from a solid, middle-of-the-road hard worker who is getting NOTHING from being a "good little worker bee" to a hardline fighter who finally sees (literally by the aid of some special glasses) the reality they are living in and refuses to allow his friend to walk away from it. Because Roddy was/is a pro-wrestler these two have to have the obligatory fight scene that goes on and on and on and on. Totally unrealistic but is a good pre-action warm up for what is coming during the rest of the movie. This would have made a great TV series at the time. The sub-plots that could have developed from the pilot might have taught the public what to watch out for in their daily lives. Too bad it never materialized. It made people think even back then.Read full review
