I bought this DVD because I first saw it as a kid when it came out in 1956. It is a traditional Alfred Hitchcock film, in black and white, with one exception; Hitchcok did not do a cameo. I believe it is the only one he didn't appear in. It's based om a true story of a man by tne name of Manny Ballestrero, an Italian American who plays bass in a band at a club in New York City. He's a hard working working family oriented guy who, through mere speculation by some witnesses who really aren't sure, is accused of robbery. Then the shoddy police work just about sinks Manny and could put him in prison for a very long time. Miranda rights weren't in existence until 1966, so Manny is treated like garbage. The police have him guilty before he even gets to court. Fighting the charges to prove his innocence costs Manny just about everything he has in his life, including his wife. She goes insane during the ordeal, somehow blaming herself for the bad situation the family is in. She's insitutionalized, but eventually makes somewhat of a recovery. They evenually catch the real robber and the two men very much alike, and they dress alike. This is a very good film about a classic case of mistaken identity; something that could happen to any one of us, at any time. I highly recommend it, it is riveting and you'll find yourself "in the plot" as you wish there was something you could do to help Manny. I could definitely see a remake of this film.Read full review
Classic Hitchcock. Great story, great actors, great sets, amazing camera angles.

More, Hitchcock, movie magic. This one is very stark & somber with no Hollywood flair. It simply recounts the tragic story of an innocent man falsely accused of a series of crimes. It carries you deeper and deeper into the man's nightmare but finally lets you go. The dark realism of 1950s New York City is on view here. It's very real and based on a true story. Alfred Hitchcock's usual cameo shot has been omitted because he wanted to keep it so real.

Excellent movie and not your typical Hitchcock movie. Very sad what happened to the wife during her husbands legal ordeal. I am glad she got out of the sanitarium, but it would have been nice to see how she was later on when the kids got older. Shows how our circumstances can affect how we are if we don’t know the Lord.
