I purchased this book through eBay because it is hard to find in the world of bookstores. The book was banned by court order for infringement of rights (Gone With The Wind) and then the order was overturned. This is written from the perspective of a slave who was born on Tara and the vernacular used by the fictitious 'writer' (it is written as a journal) is sometimes difficult to sift through - though it does get easier as the 'writer' becomes older and better read/educated. This book tells a very different story and the characters and plantation names are all 'in code' (actually the slave's nicknames) and requires some concentration to align with the original novel. From what I know of history, this is likely a very accurate depiction of the way the story could 'really' have occurred. This takes place before, during, and after the events of GWTW. Considering the above, please do not plan this as a quick read. It may take several sittings to get through but you will likely not feel that you have wasted your time when done.Read full review
The Wind Done Gone is a must read, one because it's a wonderful literary piece where language and illusion meet to broaden our understanding of difference between history and the making of history; and two, because Gone With The Wind has gone largely un-interrogated, the consequences of which continue to feed the division or the races. marcus scott

Solidly written. Serves as a very good counterpoint to Margaret Mitchell's classic that takes the rose-colored glasses off of plantation life.
