This is the final book in a trilogy by W.S.B. which I feel is underrated compared to his other work. Although it is predictably vile and disturbing, I feel it is far more broad in scope and it is much more comprehensible than Naked Lunch. This makes it an insightful and worthwhile read for sure. Burroughs wit, and social commentary is all over this, what I believe to be some of the finest and most brutally honest work from the perspective of the father of American subculture. This makes it especially more important as these subcultures work their way into the mainstream media. Sexual preference, Narcotic addiction and religious tyranny and freedom are all major themes of this trilogy. The perspective that Burroughs takes is unlike any other because he has nothing to obscure his honesty and experience as perhaps,THE, major trailblazer in world culture on these topics that few else have the courage to face honestly. A little known tidbit about the Road to the Western Lands: Burroughs modeled this entire trilogy and especially the first and last books on Norman Mailers even more despicably vile book "Ancient Evenings". Reading this and some of Mailer's other work will give a deeper perspective into the concerns that Burroughs seems to so effortlessly pluck out of his mind.Read full review
