If anyone is interested in the foundations of Western Music, they must be exposed to the founder J.S.Bach. In his endevours to move from the just tuning of his contempories, he sought out musical instrument manufacturers, music theorists, and auditory experts who could assist him. What resulted was a system of tuning and a collection of instruments that allowed every key to be related to any other. That is, modulation of themes, chords and contrapuntal voices could be written and played in any key on a keyboard and they would maintain the thematic intensity and intent of the composer. Bach then began writing a series of works, contained in Books I and II of the "Well Tempered Clavier," that would provide anyone with the essentials of this system. These books are necessary tutorials to learning, understanding and appreciating the tempered system of tuning while being exposed to some of the best constructed pieces of music in the Western Tradition. All of this music is challenging to play and a joy to hear.Read full review
