I saw this movie when I was a child and it left a lasting impression on me. I feel that the movie although fictional in many parts,is a close adaptation of the biblical account of the book of Ruth. Scripture does not say exactly how Naomi's husband and sons died. According to scripture, Ruth and Mahlon were married for ten years before he died. In this fictional account, Mahlon delivers a crown for the next child that will be sacrificed and attempts to speak to Ruth about his God who does not require the sacrifice of children and this visit begins their ensuing romance. This fictional account helps the viewer to understand how Ruth who is depicted as a Moabite priestess and whose duty is to prepare the child to be sacrificed to her pagan diety, realizes how wrong this practice is. Mahlon is blamed for her change in attitude and is made a slave and is sent to a rock mine. Ruth attempts to rescue Mahlon who is stabbed, taken to a hiding place and dies within minutes after they arrive and are married. Ruth's love and faithfulness to Naomi as they leave Moab for Bethlehem is moving. Through Ruth's marriage to Boaz, Naomi's kinsmen redeemer, begets Obed the grandfather to King David whose lineage begets Jesus the Christ. I would highly recommend this movie, with the understanding that it does not follow scripture to the letter.Read full review
Good movie, I saw this years ago and it's very good too. Good leads and a fine supporting cast, good screenplay, and fine direction. This has replaced my VHS copy.

Having read the Bible book of Ruth many times, I can say with assurity that this movie is not true to God's Word. It uses the names and places of the Bible, but the story itself unfortunately does not match the Scripture. You may find it interesting, and learn something of Bible times and laws and customs. Ruth was from Moab and she loved Noami, they got that right, but Boaz was able to purchase her as his wife from the nearer kinsman. I find the true story so compelling and magnificent that I don't know why anyone would want to change it. So be sure to read the Bible account. Powerful Boaz is symbolic of Jesus Christ, who redeemed us on the cross. How great that Ruth is in the lineage of Jesus Christ.
Remembered seeing this movie in the theater when it was first released and it has stayed with me ever since. Watched it this time after reading Ruth in my Bible and found it to be a reliable version of the story...much more detail given than is told in Ruth, but the additions to the tale are plausible and add to the story telling. The passing of almost 60 years hasn't diminished the telling in any way.

This movie is an older one but a great one. This movie brings the story of Ruth alive. I would recommend this movie. It is family friendly and definitely worth watching.
