I do not own this particular book, so I do not know what Carol Alt says exactly, but in response to the review warning of the dangers of raw food, I wanted to clarify that raw diets are nearly always vegan (no animal products). Examples were given regarding the dangers of consuming raw milk, eggs and oysters. A typical raw food-ie would NOT be consuming milk, eggs or oysters. Some do eat sushi or ceviche, but most do not. Certainly there are still bacterial dangers in fruits and vegetables (remember the spinach e. coli thing a year ago), but no one is immune from such risks from our food supply, regardless of what kind of diet they have.
Ms. Alt is dead wrong about how healthy raw foods are. "Raw" does not mean safe or bacteria-free. Ask the mothers whose babies died after they ate soft cheeses made with unpasteurized milk. They had spontaneous abortions when they contracted Listeria monocytogenes. Ask the fathers of toddlers whose children died or went into kidney failure after they ate raw or undercooked ground meat contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Ask the families of diabetics who ate raw oysters and died from a Vibrio vulnificus infection. Ask the families of senior citizens who drank high protein shakes made from raw eggs and nearly died from Salmonella enteriditis. People have cooked food for thousands of years not because it tastes better, but because raw animal foods are often not safe to eat raw. The heat of cooking or pasteurization kills dangerous bacteria. Raw animal foods are NOT safer or healthier, they are DEADLY. I know. I've spent 20 years as a food safety professional. But don't just take my word for it. Every respected public health authority in the U.S. - CDC, FDA, USDA - will tell you this. Try doing a search on their websites using the terms "raw milk", "raw oysters", or "raw eggs". Following Ms. Alt's advice could kill you!Read full review
Just finished reading this book; but then I read her first one as well along with other raw books and lots of online research. Looks sound and worth checking into as a diet lifestyle I especially liked the forward by Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez and am waiting for the day when he writes about his clinical studies into working with raw and the other modalities he's used to help patients with hard hitting problems. For anyone starting out on this type of food lifestyle would require buying many things not commonly used from the SAD diet which is cooked. The idea of starting out slowly and incorporating raw/living enzyme rich foods eating; done "The Raw 50" way is a sound idea and the route best taken if one has been eating cooked food all their life. The body's system is not as overloaded especially for someone not in the best of health to begin with. For someone in there 20's, 30's or so in sound health, jumping in with both feet would be worth trying if the interest is there. As with all changes to a diet lifestyle detox will happen, how healthy immune wise one is dictates how long, hard or prolonged detox will take to make the change in a person's system and towards health and homeostasis (balanced body system). For me, eating raw would be akin to eating the way it will be like in Heaven or the Garden of Eden before the fall happened. This simple opinion is just that a mere opinion, and nothing more. This type of life style eating is not for everyone and so reading up on this subject with other "raw food" books and doing sound research both online, talking to raw food groups, individuals and such would be the smart way to go to make a good and sound decision to try this for one's self. No matter what a person does in life "One's Journey" "Always Starts Within" no matter what they undertake....diet lifestyle aside. 1brokenangelRead full review
The recipes are simple and easy without any complicated ingredients! I love Carol's versions of raw foods. She makes it seem like a much easier transition into the world or raw foods with The Raw 50. Both of her books give great suggestions on equipment for your kitchen and the way she makes short cuts. A must for anyone interested in a healthier lifestyle.
I like this book because it kept me on the path to a more compassionate type of eating, and in so doing, made me feel more energetic; my skin is clearer; my hair more vibrant. And I feel HAPPIER. I disagree with the previous review, regardless of this person's credentials because Ms. Alt proposes eating raw PLANT foods ... NOT raw animal products.
