Phosphorescent Rat is the third album by Hot Tuna, released in 1974. It captures the band at their most prolific time period. Their first album, simply titled 'Hot Tuna", features Jorma Kaukenen and Jack Casady, the 'core' of Hot Tuna, (and both original founding members of The Jefferson Airplane) performing acoustic compositions at The New Orleans House in Berkeley Ca. in 1969. The group's second album, Burgers, released in 1972, is a mixture of electric, and acoustic songs and is considered by Hot Tuna fans, to be one of their best albums, containing many classic original Tuna songs. "Phosphoescent Rat" is really only their second studio album. It contains many melodic tunes, expertly played by Jorma and Jack, with the aid of drummer Sammy Piazza. It could almost be a sequel to 'Burgers'. This album, along with the other two, comprise the material that would be the essence of Hot Tuna's live shows for four decades. If you know the inimitable guitar stylings of Jorma Kaukonen, and you are familiar with Jack Casady's incredible bass playing, than this album is a must for your collection. On the other hand, as the saying goes, if you don't know Jorma, you don't know Jack.Read full review
