I'd first read this book as a teen. I read it again in 2007 as preparation for a trip to the Ukraine and lately I had the urge to read it again. Reading this book--it's hard to imagine that the author was only in his early twenties--he lived such a brutal life that one would've thought he was older. The book is an autobiography of Sergei Kourdakov's life--from being orphaned as a young child and raised in Soviet institutions to living on the streets to eventually becoming a rising star in the Russian Communist Party. The reason the book is named as it is is because Sergei was hand-picked to lead a secret unit whose sole objective was to rid Communist Russia of her greatest threat--the underground church. He eventually becomes disillusioned with Communism and finds deliverance in the very Church he tried to destroy. Eventually he defected to Canada. I highly recommend this book. Not because it's particularly good writing--although it is a good read--but more because of the story it tells. Many people have little knowledge of what Communist Russia was really like and, as a wise man has said, those who forget history are bound to repeat it. This is a young man who lived it, believed fiercely in it, and ultimately was thoroughly disillusioned by it.Read full review

It is not very often that the world outside of the Soviet Union gets to see a personal glimpse of what is was like to live inside. this is a excellently written story about a man who overcame trememdous difficulties and not only survived, but came to have a prosperity that was surprising. I've read it twice now!
