This book is a real eye opener, and shows the shameless looting of our Social Security Trust fund by our elected officials. President Regan and President Bush senior and junior could not do away with the big government that none of them liked,so they gave tax breaks to their rich friends when their was not enough money to pay for it. When our country goes bankrupt there will be massive cuts in government programs affecting millions of average Americans and the Conservative Republicans will have eliminated the Big Government they hate. Wonder if the ever thought of the suffering this will cause to the average America. They used our Social Security Trust Fund money to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. Any one want to guess what the National Debt is and who is paying the interest on this debt? We as Americans are going to paying for it and our great grand children will too. What our government officials did and are still doing is criminal and its called "Embezzlement" Our elected official are now worried that there will not be enough money to pay all of us Baby Boomers that are going to retire in the next few years. Maybe they are planning on raising the Retirement Age to eighty five. Maybe the could stop stealing our money and stop giving big tax breaks to wealthy donors. They could start obeying the federal law against using our Social Security money to pay for the other government programs. EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK!!!Read full review
In 1983 Alan Greenspan headed up a commission to develop a plan to keep Social Security solvent, part of that plan was to prepare Social Security for the large number of retirees from the baby boomer generation. This plan increased the FICA taxes so that baby boomers not only paid for current S.S. beneficiaries but also prepay towards their own benefits. The result was that S.S. would start running surpluses which were intended to be invested and drawing interest so that when the strain of the baby boomers retiring started in 2017 that money could be pulled to pay full benefits until 2043. This surplus money was called The Social Security Trust Fund and it was suppose to be kept apart from government revenue and not used to pay for government expenses only those expenses that arose as a result of S.S., and Medicare. Whatever was left was meant to be invested drawing interest so it would be ready when S.S. needed it. The government, President and Congress, had different ideas about this money and despite the fact that this was FICA tax money, not normal revenue, the government began using the surplus as soon as it began to accumulate. FICA is a tax people pay into, but not equally. The majority of working Americans pay this tax on all of their income, however those with incomes above a certain amount only pay FICA on that amount and no more. So Bill Gates would pay just as much FICA as an upper income married couple and no more. This goes for all the wealthy above a certain income. The kicker is this, when the surplus money was used to give tax cuts by H.W. Bush and later by George W. Bush, it was not the working Americans who benefited the most, it was that group of wealthy who in reality had not paid a fair share towards FICA but received billions as a result of the tax cuts. So FICA tax money, money that came primarily from working middle Americans was GIVEN to the top income levels and the top 5% got the most. This book is about how politicians have, over the last 25+years committed fraud and embezzled money from working Americans and gave it away to the top 5% of the wealthiest people in the United States. Politicians on both sides hope that the public remains ignorant of this fact and goes on believing the lies they are telling about how Social Security is increasing the deficit. The truth is this, there should have been a surplus of 2.5 TRILLION dollars in the S.S. Fund, not including interest earned. Instead the government stole it from us and gave it away to the wealthy. Alan W. Smith, Ph.D. doesn't take sides he just reports on the data that he has uncovered and kept track of for a little over three decades. He has been on a constant vigil to educate, inform, and try to correct this terrible injustice to middle class Americans.Read full review
I seriously wish everyone in the country had an interest in what this book has to say. It is very informative and whether or not you agree with the author, it makes you question what is going on with our SS. With this new inquisitive attitude, you gain more self value and question people who are supposed to have your best interest.
