I have had many sign books in the past. I've used them to learn sign, and I have used them to teach sign. The "Joy of Signing" is the clearest, most descriptive book I have used. It is far more difficult to learn hand positions and movements from a book than from a person. Some times simple differences such as direction or repetition of a hand movement can change the total concept or meaning of a word. The "Joy of Signing" uses pictures and phrasing that are very clear in these aspects. Additionally postures, facial expression and the speed and size of movements are important in sign, just as voice inflection and volume are crucial to spoken communication. The Joy of sign clearly states how the meaning of one word can be changed in using nuances. "Joy of Signing" offers a large selection of words. From teaching a young child the basics of sign, to carrying on a conversation with a friend about last week's sermon, the variety of words and phrasing found in this book will supply you with what you need to converse. I bought this book as a replacement for a book I lost in a flood. I lost several sign books, some specialized and some general, but this is the book I chose to replace. It is by far the best book I have found for those who wish to learn just a little sign for fun, or for those who wish to learn sign with the intention of using it on a daily basis. I feel comfortable recommending this book to anyone who has an interest in learning this language.Read full review
I love this book. I am currently learning sign language. I've been into it for about four weeks now and this book has been by my side. I take it with me and use it regularly. It is great for learning manual signs. It is a way of learning a new language and brings an inner joy knowing that one can learn to communicate this way. I hope to help others with the knowlege I receive from this book and lessons along the way. A great book. I recommend it. Be sure to get Second Edition though, that way you have the updated information.
Joy of Signing is a great book to learn sign language. I especially like the detailed drawings. They are easy to follw as are the written instructions. I have bought this book for about 8 different people who have interpretive danced with me. I like that it gives the proper sign to which meaning of the same word . I will keep buying this book for my new dance members.
