I remember watching this PBS short series when it first came out in the 1990s and was immediately captured by the honesty and reality of the struggles of balancing farming, finances and family life. I always thought of farm life as pure and simple without the stresses that others may feel in other lines of work. This series opened my eyes and mind to the issues that can face those who operate small family farms and their impact on the family. This is a purely unscripted documentary of a Nebraska farming family comprised of a father, mother and three daughters. The film focuses quite a lot on the interaction between the mother and father and is told from both of their perspectives. This interaction often exemplifies their conflict with parochial male/female views and attempts to reconcile them with their reality. In their community the male is the bread winner that makes the important decisions for the family. The female is to take care of the family and home and not have jobs or significant dealings outside the family. However, this family finds it very difficult to suvive in this paradigm and the story provides a good expose on one family's attempt to adapt to a new paradigm. You may think that this would be a one-and-done film when it comes to viewing, however, the story is so compelling and the people involved are so real that you may find that it grabs a part of you that just connects with the film. It has me.Read full review
This documentary is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever watched. I have rewatched it several times over the years. It especially poignant when times seem to get personally tough. You realize how difficult life can be for others, making your own problems seem small in comparison. Juanita and Darrel Buschkoetter go through three hard years of working multiple jobs to keep the farm going in spite of low crop prices, bad weather, and strain on their marriage. It's tough to watch, but stick with it. It's worth the few hours of your time.
This is part documentary and part love story. The film has you stepping into the troubled but passionate lives of Juanita and Darrel Buschkoetter as they try to cling to their family and their farm. You'll get a taste of the harsh farm life as it blends with a bittersweet drama of their modern day marriage. As a farmer, Darrel works all day and night for a bumper crop while Juanita cleans other people's houses and tries to finish her college degree. There are some heavy obstacles in their way but the whole story is how love can bind two people together no matter what.
It's a quality product...great story about the life and struggles of the American farmer ..they never gave up and came through.
