This movie is a family friendly film made in 1988. One in a series of several "Movietales" (Fairytales) by Cannon Productions. Most of these movies were made in Jerusalem and have lavish gardens and backgrounds. A lot of the secondary actors are Jewish. These films are musicals too, which are nice in the tradion of most older classic stories that were made into movies. This film stars Sid Ceaser as The Emporer and he does a great job. He role is vain but full of humor and at times acts "insane," but in a gentile way. Beautiful Lysette Anthony plays his daughter, Princess Gilda who falls in love with a Commoner- nephew to the man who swindles the Emporer into thinking he has a secret cloth that is invisible. To whomever "can't see the cloth" they are unfit for their office and stupid. So, they buffalo themselves into believing they do see it! The Emporer learns that his vanity is the most stupid thing of all. Full of humor both witty & corny. Wonderful costumes, cute songs and lovely sets- locations. A fun film!Read full review
This is one film from a favorite fairytale series from my childhood. If you enjoy Shelly Duvall's Fairy Tale Theatre, this film (and others from the Cannon Movie Tale Series) is a must-have! Magical, mischievous....lavish costumes and scenery. It's 80's-ish and a bit quirky, but I personally love that about the entire Cannon Movie Tale series. It's a feast for the eyes and ears...and for the childlike heart.
