Even though this book is fiction it could have happened - and probably different versions of it happened many times over during World War 11. I wish everyone under 20 had to read an account of things that happened in Germany so that it could never happen again - but, unfortunately, it seems man's inhumanity to man has always been around and probably will until the end. The characters were so well defined that you feel like you know them. As everywhere in the world there are good people and bad people. We cannot define a whole country by the actions of a few (Hitler and his followers). The book is well written though it does have a strange narrator - well worth the money. By the way, the movie is good also.

When a Jew "MAX" comes to live/hide in the basement we see Liesel passes time to the very ILL Jew ...Max...by reading to him. She discovers a friend in the local burgermeisters wife...who allows her to "remove" books from her home. Leisel is brilliantly played by Sophie Nelisse who looks like a very young Drew Barrymore at times. This is an excellent story and filmed movie. WE see how Liesel soon loves her new family. The movie is narrated by a character we know is 'death' who comes often to Leisel in the loss of her family and friends. This story moves along very well and we are 100% glued to the story. It ends in a very unexpected way. Sophie is a very gifted and talented child actress who both charms us into following the story of Leisel. a modern classic. the Cinematography is outstanding.Read full review
