I bought this movie, because it is the second Bing Crosby movie with him playing the role as a priest F. O'Malley. I got "Going My Way" recently & enjoyed it, so I got this one, thinking I would enjoy it too. I did. It's a good "standard" for any video collector to have in his/her collection. It is black & white. I have not looked to see if anybody has colorized it or not. There are at least a couple of nice songs in both of these movies, with Bing, possibly playing the piano accompaniment. It dowsn't matter if the viewer has seen either of these movies to ensure they enjoy the other. They can be enjoyed independently of the other. In Going My Way, Bing is a parish priest; in The Bells of St. Mary's, he is the pastor of a parochial school. I remember, from a long time ago, a song entitled "The Bells of St. Mary's" the lyrics inmy memory are not the lyrics of the song sung in this movie, but the melody is close. How "true-to-life" this movie is to a real parochial school of the time (late 1950's-early 1960's), but it is a good movie. And that is what I am going to stick with for a "grade" on these movies - a "B".Read full review
This movie brings back many memories. See, I am from that "Old School", and I sincerely miss those days that you see in this movie. When you could walk almost anywhere, at any hour, in safety. The days when respect was taught and honour thy God, flag and country, cherish thy family, love thy neighbor and do good whenever possible was the rule of the day. When nuns really dressed like nuns were supposed to and they were seen everywhere and held in high reverence and regard. This movie brings one back to this time and shows how blessed our nation once was when all we had to worry about was fixing a school roof and keeping our minds on schoolwork and play. Honesty mattered too. I remember the clean, holilike-fragrance of the church candles and the sights of holidays when we could display decorations without a communist ACLU forbidding us to do so. All the streets were lit up with glorious coloured lights hanging from pole to pole in the snowy landscape and people sang christmas songs and greeted each other with smiles all aglow. We could hear songs like the one in this movie, "I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas" was heard in the streets. Bells chiming and nuns singing. What a memory. This movie is like that. The spirit of giving is shown. This movie gives you the feeling of a place you'd want to be in and that's why the little girl wanted to stay there. She felt like I did. That you wanted to belong. In this film your dreams belong.Read full review

I bought because it is one of my favorite movies. It has not been shown on any pay or regular network for two years. I was glad to find it on VHS for a great price.
