First published in late 2003, the book "The Beatles Are Coming! The Birth Of Beatlemania In America" is a fascinating look at the history of the initial arrival of The Beatles to the United States in February of 1964. Masterfully written by noted Beatles author and New Orleans resident Bruce Spizer, his attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. Covering the events leading up to the first American appearance of the Beatles in America, the book chronicles a one year timeline from February 7th of 1963 when the single "Please Please Me" was first released in the U.S.A. through February 21st of 1964 when the group was leaving home for England. All of the details that span the one year timeline tells a brilliant story of how the group became the sensationa of the UK, while eventually dominating the American music scene. Featured are the stories of their arrival in New York; their debut on The Ed Sullivan Show; performances in New York, Washington D.C. and Miami; and the record releases that are covered in extraordinary detail. The book includes many images in either full color or original black-and-white. There is also a forward written by Walter Cronkite who recalls his experiences from that historic moment in time. Perhaps the most interesting chapter in this book tells about an alternative world in which Capitol records released the single "She Loves You" in late 1963; the group's subsequent arrival in New York on November 22nd of that year; and the aftermath of the day's tragic events. This is a unique look at what might have happened. Overall, this book is another fine publication from Bruce Spizer, who has become the nation's leading authority about the Beatles. He has also written 6 books about the American records from the Beatles that were released on the Vee-Jay, Capitol, Apple and Swan record labels in America and a book about the records on the Parlophone label in the UK. He has also contributed to the 6th edition of The Beatles' American Records Price Guide. "The Beatles Are Coming! is a nice change of pace for a Bruce Spizer book about the lads from Liverpool. It fits right in with his other titles.Read full review
