This is the Holy Scriptures of puppy raising! This book is not full of vague piffle. The monks tell you what you really need to know in clear language. What you apply from the book will depend on your own pup, but most everything is essential to know. Thank you Monks of New Skete!

The book is well written and impressive. My mistake was in thinking it was a dog training book where I could teach my 14 month old puppy the basic commands, which is what I wanted. This book is geared for the dog owner to care for the puppy from birth.

I saw this book recommended by several websites based on the specific breed I was interested in getting. A Bernese Mountain Dog is what I wanted for years and I now have a pure bred boy. The advice outlined in this book works very well on this breed of dog. It addresses the dogs need to be led by a pack leader which is talked about so often in dog training these days. It offers real exercises to show your dog you are his or her pack leader. It is an easy read and I was hesitant to stop reading it. I wanted all the knowledge it provided all at once. The author never gave any advice about training that seemed cruel or scary throughout the entire book. My puppy has responded very well so far and seems to be on his way to a balanced and happy life. I plan on reading it over and over again. Highly recommended!Read full review
I love this book, in fact, I have two copies. One I keep and one I loan out to the owners of new puppies. For "special" friends, I buy them a copy of their own. I also partner that with "good owners, great dogs" by Brian Kilcommon (sp). I have two copies of that as well. The Monks give solid advice and I credit that to an almost perfect Wheaten terrier who is now almost 5. I did refer to it again when we got our Airedale puppy a year or more ago. It is well written, easy to follow and not without humour. I would recommend this book very highly to anyone thinking of or recently getting a puppy. I believe that many "bad dog" problems are not caused by the dog at all, but rather the ignorance of the owner.
This is an excellent book that during the time that I bred, trained, and sold German Shepherds, I recommended to all my puppy buyers. This book covers the psychological development stages of the German Shepherd puppy accurately. The advice on corrections and behavior shaping are ideal, instructing owners on how to communicate with dogs in a way that the dog easily understands. It also explains clearly to the owner, how the owner should firmly show the dog that the owner is the boss of the house, the alpha. Of all the dog books I own, this one is the one I've recommended most to people, for learning how to understand, communicate with, and train their dog.
