The historical character Samantha Parkington is a very precocious girl at the turn of the nineteenth century. This American Girl book takes a look at what's going on, not only in Samantha's life, but also throughout society and the country. The changes happening to her and her family are affecting other lives in her city, and the extended world beyond. Each of these wonderful "Welcome" books showcases an era of our American History. I'm grateful to American Girl for this superb collection! Nancy Poquadeck
The book is beautiful, but the content is such that it would be frightening to an eight-year-old child. The descriptions of the Triangle Shirtworks Fire and linchings are enough to give an adult nightmares. It is an excellent history but it should wait until the child is a teenager. I learned things from the book that I was not aware of, such as the Orphan Trains and the Children's March. It is a wonderfully researched book but should be labeled for an older age than eight years. It is beautifully illustrated as well. I was glad I had the book sent directly to me instead of to my seven-year-old granddaughter.
