Its psychology remains chilling if you were to trade places with the main character. The tragic loss of his daughter and wife are retold in flashbacks. Choosing to remain is the family home means constantly making repairs on it as the zombies return each night trying to break in while calling him out. A middle class home of wood makes for more danger than a fortress high-rise. Many dangers are mixed with boredom of redundant routines like sharpening stakes. Each update has its own problems, but this version holds up well as follows the original novel closer. Watching it on HDTV will expose its flaws which is true of old B movies. The Last Man on Earth is timeless and its colorization on DVD is well done, as the colors have been correctly chosen for the early to mid 60"s. It is one of the few horror movies that holds up to my youth memories or early to mid 70"s. My negative take is the 2nd half where sci fi takes over for horror or terror. Interesting trivia: Hammer studio wanted to produce the movie with a different director, but British censors denied, Price recalled filming occurred in Winter and he was constantly running out to his car to warm up, and later directors like Romero and Carpenter point out that such old movies are still their favorites, and inspiration for later works.Read full review
This is NOT one of Vincent Price's best movies. His portrail of the main character was very cardboard and uninteresting. Maybe he and the director just needed a paycheck or payoff so past due income taxes. The storyline generally follows the book, I AM LEGEND, by Richard Matheson, pretty well through most of the movie, however, the ending very much sucks the big one. The movie appears to have been shot in Mexico, but, this edition did not have any ending credits, so I can not be sure of the location. You would be better off watching, THE OMEGA MAN, with Charleton Heston, or I AM LEGEND, with Will Smith, both based on the same book. Even NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, by George Romero, which was inspired by the book, is a better evening spent.
This movie is reportedly a classic . . . some call it one of Vincent Price's best movies. But as a teenager, I used to see this movie on TV and laugh at the zombies! The Charlton Heston remake (Omega Man)wasn't any better. If you're looking for a frightening horror movie, look someplace else. If you want to see a so-called "classic horror movie," try one of the Frankenstein or Dracula movies. If want to see a good Vincent Price film, try House of Wax.
The DVD was worked fine.

This movie is absolutely fantastic. Vincent Price is fantastic. A true pioneer for horror movies today. MUCH BETTER than I Am Legend with Will Smith.
