I have a pretty decent collection of mics for my home demo studio (no Neumanns, not yet anyway), but well-known, highly-rated vocal mics, approximately in the $200 to $500 range. This one blows them all away...by far. The first time I sang into it, the sound coming through the headphones was quite literally breathtaking. I suppose these things are subjective and each person’s vocals might yield different results, but for my voice it’s equally great on the lows, mids and highs and I can’t recommend this mic highly enough. Glad I stumbled into some glowing reviews on it. I had never even heard of the Studio Projects brand until about a month ago, and I’ve been doing home recording for decades! Hope this helps someone else take a chance on it like I did.

I had a first gen C1 and this was my first time using a gen 2. The Gen 2 has the same high frequency emphasis, but is less harsh, more smooth and pleasing. I did an A/B with a Rode NTK tube mic (with RK-12 capsule) and it was uncanny how similar the C1 gen 2 and the NTK sound. The C1 has the kind of nice compressed mid-highs. Out of the box the C1 gen 2 sounds pretty good. I may also put a micarts C1 mod kit into it to take it to the next level. The exterior build quality is solid, and many of the components inside are high quality (WIMA caps and polystyrene coupling capacitor), but there are also lower grade electrolytics (not sure if they are in the signal path and or not).

Simply put, the Studio Projects CS-series mics are awesome. Obviously, they are incredibly versatile, with the variable pad and low-and high-pass controls, but the big thing with these guys is the sound! They are full, detailed, and very, very natural. I have seen many comparisons of the SP C1 and Neumann U87, and although I don't have a U87 at my disposal, I have compared the CS1 with the C1. They have more fullness, depth, and low-end extension than the C1, without the high-frequency hype. I have also compared them with my Advanced Audio CM87 (a worthy U87 clone if there ever was one), and they stand toe-to-toe with that outstanding mic. If you want sound that is true to the source, get a CS1, or its multi-pattern sibling, the CS5. You won't be disappointed, and will most likely be thrilled!Read full review
This mic was sold missing the top metal mesh screen. Got a good deal as a result..In addition to protecting the capsule, the mesh also removes RF noise so it was necessary to replace it before using. Found a sheet of mesh online for $8. After receiving it, fiddled around and got a pretty decent replacement mesh piece out of it. The mic has a smooth sound but is a bit harsh above 8k. I'm planning to install the C1 mod kit from microphone-parts as I expect it will take make this good mic great!

For the money this is a very good Mic. I did an AB with the Studio Projects C1 against the Studio Projects T3, Studio Projects B1, and Neumann TLM102. The C1 sounds about fifty time better than its little brother B1. Everything the B1 lacks in clarity and color the C1 has and more. Get the C1 hands down. The C1 and T3 actually both have pleasing qualities. The C1 has a very good core to the sound. The T3 on the other hand is a little brighter and has just a touch of air in the upper regisiter. Surpringly both together provide a rich and airy vocal that sounds yummy. If you had to choose between the both of these and are really concerned about your budget the C1 will not disappoint. The C1, T3, and TLM102 AB was extremely intersting. For the money a person should strongly consider getting the C1. After I AB'ed the C1 and T3 by themselves I decided to get my TLM102 in the mix. Those who have used the TLM102 know that it give a sheen and color to vocals that is really pleasing to the ear. The TLM102 also has a presence and is extremely sensitive. I mean it pics up everything. The C1 doesnt have the same presence but it does have a pleasant coloration. It may not be as senstive as the TLM102 but it captures the essence of the sound source. The T3 is similar to the C1 in that respect but has a cooler sound to me. If you cannot get at TLM 102 (NOT TLM103)then I would choose the C1.Read full review
