Dan Hicks passed away February 2016. This did not make headline news like David Bowie or Prince leaving the planet. But Dan was as much a musical monster as those guys... and he did it longer. Dan didn't produce a lot of albums so any one you buy will be special and amazing... if you like swing jazz, scat and bluegrass. Dan really didn't care for rock 'n roll even though his breakthrough to fame occurred in San Francisco in the heyday of psychedelia. Definitely not for everyone... but your parents certainly would have approved.

Strikin' It Rich is a perfect title for this LP-now CD, as Dan Hicks saw it as his road to riches and a worthy followup to "Where's The Money." Whereas WTM was live and exciting and funny, this a look at Hicks more serious side. Yes, still funny at times but the added dimension of moody and beautiful creeps into the repitoire. Still music that is most worthy and appealing to anyone with music in theri soul. Moody Richard and I Scare Myself are both tunes of much beauty and reflection and the silly includes the old Bing Crosby chestnut "I'm an Old Cowhand" performed seriously. This album should have been the Licks entry to big Money and starring roles in concerts nationwide. Unfortunately, radio was in a time of playlists, much like today and this was not exposed to enough music lovers--a shame as this belongs in every music lovers collection.Read full review
I was listening to my vinyl and decided to seekit out on cd. I enjoy the ease and clarity, but I like the album art which can't be duplicated on cd format. Also, I noticed two of the cuts were slightly different in content. I don't know why this was done. The LP has better versions.
The album is just good music.
