I've lived in Raleigh, NC most of my adult life and growing up around the Music scene there was tremendous to say the least. No Seattle, No LA, No New York City, No Nashville, memphis or even New Orleans but damn vibrant, the scene was at one point electric with originality & the people knew it. I play guitar and sing in bands in the hardcore Metal/melodic/noise-art/experimental genre but I've always loved other music simultaneously. Whiskeytown is an anomaly, it was a culmination of Ryan Adams' vision of growing up listening to & loving the music of old rebel country, where he's from, he has an affinity for stylistically punk veins running through him. This album/collection of songs from an era bygone are still relevant and beautiful as they were back then. Americana, class it as you will it's excellent. Every song captures some kind of lament or memory in the minds eye. Absolutely brilliant ! I won't go through and review each song, they all speak for themselves, purchase it and enjoy !Read full review
I bought this CD because I'm a 40 something person who has grown to appreciate Ryan Adams' music after being exposed to it by my 20 something son. I think Adam's is one of the best songwriter's in America today. I wanted to hear what his earlier work sounded like and wasn't dissappointed by this CD. This CD was classified as 'Country', but I find it's far removed from that genre. I would say it's a great blend of rock, country, & folk with some bluegrass thrown in. For those who love Adam's music you should love this CD. A wide variety of songs to appeal to various tastes.
Awesome music! Nothing to dislike about this CD. Tom Petty turned me on to Ryan Adams when he played it (16 Days off Whiskeytown ) on his Buried Treasure Show { XM Radio Channel 40 - Deep Tracks every Monday morning @ 10:00am EST NEVER MISS IT } So this comes highly recommended from the master. CD is Excellent, I'm glad ebay had it for me to buy.

This is an astonishing collection of tunes that I can't believe I haven't owned until now. The reputation that Ryan Adams has today stems from this record - the songs range from heartfelt Americana to barn-burning rockers. I have a couple of later Adams releases, but this is the one to own.
