This is one of the best chainsaws Stihl has ever built, the first one I bought (in 1986) I ran for 10 years (seasonally , firewood) . I broke the starter rope, and completely wore out the first bar (along with several chains). At that point I was without a working saw (temporarily) until I got parts and repaired it. I then purchased two new Stihls an 046 and a 036 PRO. I repaired the 034AV and sold it to a neighbor (for the cost of the repairs). The last I knew a few months back (2017) the saw is still running and they are still using it!!!!!!! I wish I still had it......... George Oleson Camp Crook, SD

I have had the 034 and 036 models for many years and I can say with experience that you will not be able to get and brand of saw new today with the power to weight ratio as the 034's. Due to EPA's crackdown on emissions of small engine powered equipment such as chainsaws they have forced manufacturers to lean out the mixture to the point that it drastically effects power output and longevity and most small to medium sized saws today are non tune able as far as carb adjustment goes so if you want a very good saw with plenty of power then stick with the 034 or 036. The 036 pro models add in a compression release button which not only makes it much easier to start up while in a tree but reduces the heavy wear and tear that is applied to the starting rope, pawls, pulley while yanking it to get it fired up. I find that the 034 seems to have a bit more vibration then the 036 but also seems to have as much or more torque so there you have it, my opinion on this model saw and I have over 35 years climbing experience.Read full review

This saw was sold to me on the auction as a non-running saw. It arrived on time. I found that the piston and rings were shot, likely from straight gas running, and it also could not deliver a spark to the plug. I decided to rebuild it with a new ignition coil and a new big bore cylinder and piston kit. The upgrade required a few modifications to the shroud for clearance, but now I have an equivalent to the Stihl 036 Pro. This is an excellent saw and should give me years and years of service. It was well worth the repair, and being a handyman with saws, I had no trouble doing it. A new saw with the same power and features today would run at least $675, and I spent a total of about one-third of that amount. Overall, I rate it as an excellent firewood saw, very well made, and with a very high power-to-weight ratio that very few saws sold today can match.Read full review

I couldn't be happier with this purchase from BigDaddy! What a nice machine! Was really nice to get a CLEAN saw! You can see that many of the saws for sale are very dirty. Runs, starts, and cuts with serious power. I installed a 25" bar on it and have been working on a 36" diameter Oak tree. Taking the saw out this very morning to work on the tree. Five stars for this purchase! Thanks again!
