For starters, the game is VERY reminiscent of Doom in it's appearance and style of game play. The nondescript walls that seem to disappear and reappear at will sometimes. But, the "detail" put into the backgrounds, IE the graffiti on the walls, street details(lights and what not), and the constantly moving gray clouds through a green sky as well as the number and style of attacks available, from the beginning of game play no less, and the near complete cast of the Spawn comic characters make the game worth having for anyone who is a fan. There are 4 different areas you have to go through before you get to take on Malbolgia in the 9th circle of Hell. They are, 1:street Spawn, 2:medieval Spawn, 3:savage Spawn and 4th is actually in Hell. You MUST find the key in your current level in order to unlock the next level. Also, the fact that you are able to use the cape and chain attacks right from the start(when in battle), gives you an advantage over your adversaries. Being that as it may, that Spawn and all of the characters are a bit blocky, my feeling is that since you get to experience(fight, get a closer look, etc) of pretty much everyone for the comics, I was willing to overlook the somewhat misshapen forms of the characters. (Even though Spawn does kinda resemble an ape in a Spawn costume.) I would dare say that if you are a fan of the comics, this would be a welcome addition to your PlayStation game collection. It did take a bit to get used to the controls as I am playing it on my PS2, but it wasn't too awful hard to adjust to. I would venture to say that this game has the style of Mortal Combat(when attacking an adversary), you know the old "forward, forward, down, triangle" for a more powerful attack, mixed with some of the visual aspects of Doom.(the maze of walls until you enter a battle or a restaurant or some other place that you need explore) All in all the game is, if nothing else, fun to play once you have memorized the attacks.Read full review
There is only one redeeming quality to this game. Maybe two. The first being that it's Spawn. If you're a fan of Spawn, then there's no doubt you already own this game or would like to, just because it's Spawn. As a Spawn product, I admit, it's a pretty neat disc to own. Especially with jewel case and artwork included. The booklet art has a very nice cover that's slightly thicker than normal PS1 game manuals and it's embossed as well. It seems to have been printed on a metallic medium, so some parts are reflective. A very nice visual touch. As a video game... In all honesty, it's a pretty poor experience. At least for me it is. Even for a Playstation 1 game. The graphics are beyond sub-par. A hodge-podge of blocky giant pixels, everywhere you turn. The controls are very frustrating at times too. While you can maneuver Spawn swiftly back and forth, it's his turns that really gets to me. They take forever to initiate. While you can make an immediate 180 roll move, if you want to run slightly left or right, you'll notice it's a bit jerky. The fighting system isn't all that bad but it is a little off mark. Sometimes your punches and kicks just don't connect. Even when you're very close to the enemy. You're most likely to get hit at least once. The game makes it seem mandatory. The levels and missions have a very monotonous thing going. After a while, it can get tedious. These qualities can really sink the fun factor for any game and it definitely sinks it for this one. If you're not a fan of Spawn, skip it. You'll probably hate it. Any good qualities besides the jewel case? Well...again, it all comes down to whether or not you are a Spawn fan. As a fan, I did kind of enjoyed the eerie music and strangeness due to the bad graphics. It seemed like I fell into a twilight zone of pixels. A hell of sorts but not in the ways intended by the game, but due to it's limitations and other shortcomings. I would play this game and use a lot of imagination to fill in the gaps. That's my unbiased review.Read full review
This is not a great game, but for the only spawn game on ps1 (not the JP version), it's good for those who love the character or want a challenge. It's not easy.
