James Murphy helped kickstart the DFA dance-punk revolution a few years back with his legendary “Losing My Edge” single, which featured Murphy reciting a hilarious list of his record-nerd hipster credentials over a slamming electrodisco beat. Suddenly, it was OK for rockers to hit the dancefloor! On his long-awaited second album, Sound of Silver, Murphy once again shows who’s the king of the beat, with a compulsively danceable set of long, lush analog workouts. Clanking guitars, rubbery bass, and giant stacks of percussion, cowbell and clavicles hit you like a tidal wave, while his dry, acidic vocals make you proud to call yourself “North American Scum” (as he sings in the title track, an egregious rip from Pete Shelley’s “Homosapien”). It’s dance music for rockers, recalling rock-disco highlights from the Stones’ “Miss You” through Duran Duran and the Talking Heads, and this should take its proper place in that esteemed lineage.Read full review
