The biggest reason I decided to buy this unit was the up to date HDMI tech that it is capable of. Most units out there are still limiting the HDMI usages. Some will not let the HDMI carry sound, only video. When that is the case, you still need to run an additional audio cable to the receiver. This unit allows for all the current uses of HDMI to be put into use. In addition to allowing audio and video to be sent to the unit via HDMI, this unit allows the one HDMI cable that you run to your TV to also return signal to the receiver. This eliminates one more cable and makes set up better and easier. This is the first affordable unit to allow HDMI to be 2 way like this. On to the other features, The true 7.1 decoding is very good for a system of this price range. It has been able to keep up with everything I have thrown at it. The amp has more than enough power to make the room shake when there is an explosion on the screen, or make the neighbors complain when you get a new album that you cannot get enough of. The connectivity of this unit is very ample. If the 4 HDMI inputs aren't enough to hook up everything it has 3 digital comp. inputs, 3 optical audio, 1 digital coax audio, and 7 different rca level inputs. Add the digital media port (for ipod, laptop, whatever)and Sat. and terrestrial radio, and you can just about hook up anything that you will need to hear. It also has on screen display. Although I like the functionality better on some of the older models this new system is acceptable. I think they took a step backward on this one. But leave it to sony the next unit will have a better on screen set up. My suggestion is take from the old and combine. Overall for the money it is a great sounding, very compatible, up to date, nice looking, and functional center to your home theater. You will not regret spending the $250-$350 on this unit.Read full review
Pros: Looks great, excellent sound quality, all HD decoding, auto-calibration works exceptionally well with included mic, GUI menus, lots of connections, easy to setup, good remote, price Cons: on screen GUI menu doesn't overlay, slow response, beware of TV+AMP HDMI audio setting I don't conciser myself an audiophile, so when I decided to replace my aging Yamaha receiver I spent about 2 weeks researching AV receiver that could fit my needs. I wanted something inexpensive that can support both DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD which is now standard on Blu-ray discs. I have a very modest $200 5.1 Sony speaker setup so I was looking for something that can accommodate this and didn't really have need for 7.1 receiver and I didn't want to spend much more than $300. Sony STR DN1000 seems like a perfect candidate, it had great reviews, price and all the features I needed (and some that I didn't). One thing I noticed out of the box, is how great this receiver looked. Pictures don't do justice. Although shiny front of the DN1000 is a fingerprint magnet, I can't imagine too many people complaining about it. Why would you want to touch your receiver? It goes into a cabinet next to the TV and you suppose to use either included or universal (i.e. Logitech Harmony) remote. Setup was somewhat easy. Menu system is more or less intuitive and I was able to find all the settings without looking at the manual. However I did have few gripes with Sony's GUI menu system. Biggest one is that it doesn't overlay over existing HDMI signal, so when you switch to it, you loose image and sound coming from your HDMI source. So if you are watching movie you have to pause it first. Logic wise, settings that needed the most were buried furthest, and arrowing thru them was very slow and frustrating. Things like source selection should'v been on the bottom of the menu because it has dedicated button on the remote so you won't be switching it from the menu, while other important settings such as switching HDMI audio from AMP only to AMP+TV should really have dedicated button on the remote. Speaking of which, it took me a while to figure out that setting HDMI audio to AMP+TV will disable any kind of decoding! I like sound to come out of my TV when I'm watching regular TV programs, but apparently I can't really have both and it's a real chore to switch it off every time I want to watch a blu-ray. STR DN1000 comes with calibration microphone which has a very long cable. It was enough for my large living room to reach all the way to the couch. Calibration itself worked great, and all my speakers were detected correctly with exceptionally precise distance measurement. I did have to bring dB value of my sub-woofer manually because of the neighbors. HDMI switching worked well. There was a few second delay when changing from one HDMI channel to another but I had no issues with connectivity even with old Category 1 HDMI cables. Speaker cables can be slightly difficult to connect unless you have banana plugs (which I strongly suggest). And finally audio quality was good in my opinion. Decoding worked great, you see LED light on the receiver when it detects multichannel audio. Even with stereo audio STR DN1000 does pretty good job simulating surround sound.Read full review
For under a hundred it's an okay choice but it is getting out of date without wifi and without bypass. I had one these for about 6 years until the hdmi out broke - due to the cord not being long enough and yanking on it. After that I went to Ebay to replace it (and buy a longer hdmi cord) and due to availability I bought a 1030. The best thing that ever happened to me. The front of the unit is so much more user friendly and the sound is much better. Add the bypass and it's a hit. The menu is still the same clunky one as the 1000 but it works. It took me a while to figure out how to get it to pop up so in an attempt to save you time I set the source on the TV to Blu Ray and pressed the small "Gui Mode" button, not the large "Home" button, go figure.

I have never regretted purchasing Sony products. From alarm radios to televisions, personal recording devices to audio equipment, the quality is outstanding. This STR-DN1000 became available just before the Holidays and it was too good to pass up. Excellent sound/receiving and the SIRIUS addition was a neat extra. We have the receiver hooked up to the HDTV (yep, it's a Sony too) and it produces tremendous, clear quality sound. The previous receiver, also a mid-range product, was a five year old Onkyo which had great features but could not quite stand up to the sound produced by this model. We've had this receiver for two months, it's used each day, and we couldn't be more pleased.
I am pleased with the product itself. It was exactly what i was looking for (i was looking for a powerful midrange A/V receiver to upgrade from a 5.1 system to a 7.1). The power is just right, pushing my floor standing speakers to their max without much resonance. The audio encoding is pretty solid with good variation in channels. Easy menu design, although i would appreciate a screen overlay as opposed stopping all media to adjust settings, allowed for quick and easy manual set up. The actual device looks good too. Remote is a little big but that doesnt matter too much. All in all a good receiver for the price range.
