I purchased the Sony BDP-S580 back in 2011 to play Blu-ray disks and stream network content. By dumb luck, the player also played multi-channel SACD(Super Audio Compact Disks). Most of the retailers reselling these used units do not even list the SACD format. This is the best cost effective way to play the SACD disks. The new Blu-Ray & UDH players today no longer have the decoder to play this disk format except for the really expensive audiophile players like Oppo. I recently purchased another used BDP-S580 to replace a bedroom player so I would have a backup in case my original player stops working. I have not found a popular disk format yet that the BDP-S580 cannot play …. Well except for the short lived DVD-A disks and the new 4K UHD disks that have come out well after 2011. The used unit will probably be re-set to the original firmware software. You will want to upgrade the firmware software via the network first thing. (note – Screen was blank on my VIZIO TV and I had to connect another monitor to bring up the setup menu. The VIZIO TV worked just fine once the firmware was updated). Player is also a great network streamer with many video & music choices. (make sure you are on the current version of the firmware software) You are missing a real treat if you have never heard a good mixed 5.1 multi channel music disk. My top 3 picks below 1. SACD 5.1 - Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon 2. SACD 5.1 – Dire Straits – Brother in Arms (sounds completely different than 2 ch stereo) 3. DVD-A /V Hybrid 5.1 – Beatles – Love (Does not play the DVD-A part but DVD-Video still sounds amazing and a must have) ----- Discs that cannot be played ---- • BDs with cartridge • BDXLs • DVD-RAMs • HD DVDs • DVD Audio discs (DVD-A) • PHOTO CDs • Data part of CD-Extras • Super VCDs • Audio material side on DualDiscs • A disc recorded in a color system other than NTSC, such as PAL (this player conforms to the NTSC color system).Read full review

I have used this player and it is a great economic buy. I have seen some other reviews and just wanted to add my thoughts on the component Video output 1 of course it will not output 1080i unless it is a blu- Ray disc not standard DVDs but will do standard DVDs upscale through the HDMI output and they look Outstanding! Unit is thin and easy to move around and fit just about anywhere Can't Go wrong with this player if your on a budget 😊

Bought this as a backup to one I already own. I use it primarily to play SACDs via HDMI to an AVR-4310ci which I also purchased on ebay. Sounds fantastic. I use Roku now, but the smart TV portion worked really well. Has an iphone app for remote control which I like. I'll probably buy another one. SACD players are becoming rare.

Bought this player because of the WiFi ability...and extensive positive ratings. Works just fine, can access my Pandora account to play great music through the home stereo, and hooks up quickly to Netflix and Hulu for those video choices. Don't really like the Netflix interface as much as it shows smaller pics of the choices, but it is fine. So, instead of getting an Apple TV or Roku I decided the Blu-Ray player with WiFi replaced a DVD player and added the same WiFi as the Apple TV and Roku without another footprint on the shelf. Had a couple of issues with the setting up the WiFi and one issue with the player not working properly, but the Sony customer service was competent and had the issues fixed quickly. One problem required unplugging the device and replugging it...just like you have to do with your other electronics nowadays to get it to reset. I don't watch as many DVD movies anymore due to the streaming choices available, but this player is fine with DVD's...and inexpensive compared to what Blu Ray players were going for just a couple years ago.Read full review
