Great technology change from regular DSLR's. The autofocus is miles ahead of my previous A300 and it works even during photographs and videos. I am absolutely thrilled by the electronic horizon and the EVF on this camera. It is much brighter than the optical viewfinder that I was used to, and is able to provide a lot more information realtime. There is very little noise in the photographs even upto 1600. I know its relative, but its miles ahead of my A300 which had significant noise issues and comparable to a Nikon D300S that my father in law has. Compatible with older lenses and it works great with my 50mm 1.7 Minolta lens. The noise of the autofocus during movies exists, but is very minimal on a good lens like this. Overall, excellent camera for both home video and stills, especially for beginners with scene selection, Auto+, Panoramic shooting, and face detection built it. The video quality is exceptional if you manage the depth of focus well.Read full review
good product i like the camera good features, but the weight is too light While I found enough to quibble about to justify my role as a reviewer, I also found the Sony A55 and A33 to be uniquely compelling cameras. The most telling point was how hard I found it going back to an "ordinary" SLR after just a day of shooting with the A55. I've long been an avowed EVF-hater, but the viewfinder display on the Sony A55 is good enough that I found myself sorely missing it when I returned to shooting with a conventional sub-frame SLR with a typically small optical viewfinder. The Sony A55's shooting speed matches that of professional models costing literally thousands of dollars more thanks to the unique pellicle mirror design, and its uniquely Sony features (Handheld Twilight/Multi-Frame NR and Sweep Panorama modes in particular) take the A55 places no other SLR has gone before. I was also pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the Sony A55's grip was, given the tiny body size. I still prefer having more to wrap my fingers around, but this is as good a grip as I've seen on an SLR body this compact to date. While its primary target clearly is not the entry-level shooter, the Sony A55's Auto+ mode takes it closer to true "just push the button" simplicity in auto mode than any other camera we're aware of, enabling novice-level users to enjoy the multi-shot and other Scene modes without having to worry about which to use when. At the other end of the spectrum, for the enthusiast with time to become acquainted its capabilities and familiar with its quirks, the Sony A55 expands the realm of amateur photography further than any SLR to date. In the A55 and A33, Sony has used outside-the-box thinking to deliver a uniquely capable, functional, and well-designed SLR. Hot on the heels of their category-redefining NEX-3 and NEX-5, Sony's engineers have now likewise redefined what consumers can expect from an SLR.Read full review
The translucent mirror allows the images you want to capture to remain continuously on the chip, so it doesn't have to lift the mirror to activate the shutter which would take time and cause vibration. It is easy to use and has performance stats that approach the best in the class, yet at a moderate price. It is lighter, faster, smaller and far more flexible than the Konica-Minolta Maxxum 7D it replaces. It can even shoot several hours of high Def video using all your favorite lenses. The only cons were that the battery life is only long enough for a few hundred pics before exhausting and shooting sustained movies or allowing bright sunlight to hit the lens can cause the system to overheat and automatically shut down for a few minutes.
LIKES: The 1st one of these we got in impressed us so much that we immediately bought a 2nd one for our wedding photography business. The auto focus is incredible, the video is clear, it is small enough to use 1 handed and along with the til screen get angle shots you could not normally get. A major band was so impressed with this camera that they invited me up on stage to shoot pictures for their web site! It is no wonder that this camera's sibling the A-55 (same features) was voted camera of the year in 2010 by every major photo publication. DISLIKES: none yet, but buy lots of batteries.
Love this camera! So glad I was able to purchase one on Ebay. This camera has so many options to create colorful clear imagines. It is easy to use and allows adjustable lenses to be exchanged when needed for the right "shot" especially with the auto focus, or choice of manual focus. Its like having the real 35mm camera with new technology of digital combined.
