I bought this book (1) because I LOVE history, (2) because I wanted to learn about the beginning of our navy, and especially (3) because I wanted to know more about the dynamics of the Adams(Federalist)-Jefferson(republican) struggle. I was pleased with the author's style of writing as it was an easy read and entertaining. I also found it amazing that we have any military at all. To me, it inconceivale that some of our "leaders" thought we could build the kind of country consistent with the principles established in our Constitution, but fail to provide for a means to defend it. In a broader sense then, like now, it is amazing to me that our government and NATION has survived, given our leaders'/politicians' propensity towards arguing rather than taking care of the business of the American people. God save our country.Read full review
I had no idea of the politics involved during the adolescent years of our country. Toll does a great job of cutting out the irrelevant and putting out the important & interesting. I highly recommend this book to all US history buffs, especially when it deals with the Navy. I did 22 years and really enjoy the detail...

An interesting history of the early years of the US Navy. The men, the ships, battle tactics and the politics behind it all.

Another thoroughly researched, well written historical narrative. I have a problem understanding why people read so much fiction when true stories can be so compelling. Ian Toll’s books may seem daunting, but they read so easily.
