This model is very poorly designed to say the least. -Adjusting the brakes is a tedious process ( also on the reel side , more of a pain) -The gears like to jump out of alignment -The thumb bar mechanism will detach itself at random, requiring you to take off the reel side cover -Could be a lot smoother and nicer to reel -Thumb bar is only attached from one side, would not trust at all , will pop loose frequently -The levelwind eyelet rubs when you pull out line quite badly , also does not have a disengaging levelwind The Good -Frame is a nicely made , good quality -Handle is very nice to hold -Nice weight and size

I own 15 Shimano Calcutta 251 and 201 reels. I decided to try one of these Cardiff 301A reels. Got the reel new in the box ( maybe) box was opened and resealed with the oil bottle missing that comes with all Shimano reels. I put 35 dollars of power pro line on it and took it out to try it. I made two casts and the thumb bar broke internally and couldn't get it to re engage and it was making crunchy noise from inside. I will be returning it to the seller on e-bay for a full refund and WILL NOT CHANCE ANOTHER. I will only but the Calcutta series. These reels are junk at 100.00 bucks apiece.

Working mans reel. Shimano quality at a great price point. Even better when you can find a deal on it in the $80-90 range or less.

This was exactly the reel our son wanted and was so happy to receive as a Christmas gift. He is an avid fisherman so I am sure he will get lots of use from this reel.
