These were a complete surprise, my wife had actually bought the same set from Barnes and Noble but our son had never seen double-sided DVD discs before (nor had we, for that matter) and bought these because the ebay listing detailed the extra flip-side episodes he hadn't yet found. These 60's TV shows are much closer to the books than the earlier Basil Rathbone movies were and lack any war-time jingoism. They make me want to see more 60's Brit TV.

This series is very well done. The acting, costumes and sets are very convincing. The stories are almost exactly like the original work by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Actors playing Holmes and Watson are well cast. It was made by BBC in 1960's so it has that look to the film motion (due mostly to the frame rate they used). Most people do not notice that.

I like UK TV from this time period, but this serial concentrates so heavily on the sickness in the Sherlock Holmes stories. There's a BBC radio series of Holmes stories from the same time period (featuring Carleton Hobbs) that is far more humane and interesting for me.

Very good series, a blast from the past, a series where there were no big explosions, no painful violence, an interesting storyline, and enjoyable non-violent series
