I have been a big Seagate fan for many, many years and have used nothing but Seagate drives in all my home systems for over a decade. Being able to build your own home system allows you to do this, but with laptops you don’t really get a choice of brand when you make your purchase, only maybe size if you are ordering online. Since I have started a laptop refurbishing business here on eBay I finally get a choice on the drives I purchase to install, and once again Seagate proves as good as ever. I recently was able to get a large lot of these Seagate ST980815A 80 GB drives, and I have to say I was very impressed. Not only were they quite under all levels of use they also performed very well compared to similar drives from other manufacturers. During extensive testing the Seagate drives were able to complete the performance test faster than other 80 GB drives, even though the others had the very same specs. Rotational speed, while important overall, is clearly not the only consideration when judging drives. While small by today’s standards, 80 GB is still plenty for average laptop use. If you plan to have lots of videos, music and games loaded on your laptop, you may with to go with one of the bigger (read expensive) new IDE drives. However if you are a student or only need the laptop for email and the internet or basic office applications this size is more than adequate. These drives are readily available on eBay in a range of prices, from as low as $30 to as high as $60. Seagate also offered a few other sizes you may find as well, all with the same good performance. Bottom line: nice drive and a good value for older laptops.Read full review
