I bought this player because of its analog AV outputs which are essential when connecting to AV receivers which can't receive HDMI audio or can't decode DTS Master Audio signals or Dolby Digital HD audio signals, but which do have 7.1 surround analog inputs. So far, I haven't had a chance to really test this to see if it will work the way I want it to, but I did try the subwoofer analog output and that works fine. I also don't know if the firmware is up to date on this, since I can't make any sense out of the codes reported in the system information menu. This unit does have a reputation as being buggy, but it seems to work well enough as far as I can tell without knowing more about the firmware version. I did notice a slight hesitation problem when playing a Star Trek (TOS) blu-ray which has two versions of each episode, evidently using different angles. It seems to hesitate a bit when switching from one angle to another and shows "angle on" and "angle off" icons on the screen when switching. My Sony Bluray player doesn't have this problem. Perhaps this can be corrected with firmware update, I don't know. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung site, but haven't done anything with it yet. I'm hesitant to mess with a working machine. The legendary Reon chip in this unit does a fine job of upconverting DVD signals to near-bluray quality. It also loads pretty quickly for an older player. I like the fact that all the outputs seem to be hot all the time. You don't have to use menus to switch things off and on, or choose one over another. They just work. It seems to be perfectly fine unit, particularly if you can buy it for less than $70 or so. It is one of the cheapest options for 7.1 audio conversion and 7.1 analog audio outputs.Read full review
I purchased this player used and got a very good price on it, so good in fact that I had my doubts about what I was buying. I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled this out of it's packaging and hooked it up to my TV and network. The picture quality is stunning, I have all Sony blu ray players and the Samsung takes no backseat to any of them, it was a little bit slower response menu system than the Sony but in many ways it was easier to navigate and get where I wanted to be. The 7.1 surround sound is a feature that could put this at the heart of Anyone's home entertainment system and deliver a theater like performance. I almost feel like a thief getting something this nice for so cheap. Definitely one of the best buys I've made on eBay. If you are looking for a top flight blu ray system, at a fair price, I would sure recommend you look into this one, it has it all, network ready connectivity, USB port access, true 1080 High Definition output, and the list goes on. In reading what others have to say, it appears that the longivity record on this player is pretty high too. Keep it up Samsung, your certianly riding at the head of the pack in blu ray technology and High Definition performance.Read full review
