I'm using this enclosure to hold a 4TB 3.5" external hard drive. It does this well and the fan keeps the drive cool as expected but: One star off for not powering the drive down when the lap top is shut down. There is a toggle switch on the rear of the enclosure to provide this function but my other external drive enclosure, a WD, turns on and off in sync with the laptop. A second star is deducted because the wall wart power supply provided has a power cord length of a little over 3 feet which isn't enough length to reach the floor let alone the power strip(s) resident there. I was forced to buy a separate wall wart with a longer cord to use the enclosure. All that being said I am *successfully* using the enclosure but the lack of auto shutoff is a pain.

I have bought two of these. I have put a 6TB drive in one and temporarily a 160GB in the 2nd one. I plan to put a 3TB drive in the 2nd one later. So far, it has worked great. I also like that it has a fan to help keep the drives cool. The data transfer was much faster than I expected so the internal design must be really good. It comes with a power supply, USB cable, about 3 feet long, and screws. It also has a power switch on the back which makes it easy to power off when not in use. If you want a enclosure where the drives can be swapped out easily, this isn't one of those. This enclosure requires both sides to be removed, one side to put the drive in and the other to put in the screws to hold the drive. I would not recommend putting the drive in without using the screws to hold it in place. One, the drive can disconnect from the plug inside. The 2nd thing, the drive can also flop around a bit even if it stays plugged in. That could put pressure on the connector which could cause damage in the long term. This enclosure is more for installing a drive and leaving it there for long term use. At the price, one could get several of these. Overall, for a more permanent installation of a USB drive, this is a great device.Read full review

Automated backup systems sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Backups to cloud-based devices are currently priced reasonable for under 1 terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) of storage. If your history is 5 years or less then it's a good option, but if you have more than 2 terabytes of data to back up and are reluctant to trust your data to a remote cloud system (that can be hacked), then consider buying one of these and a new 4-8 terabyte USB-compatible setup. I own 6 of these now and can manage backing up and archiving 20 terabytes of data. My drives are older Seagates that have proven to last a long time (4-5 years or more) as archive units and the entire setup can be taken down and stored in a briefcase or portfolio file for moving or offsite storage. My total backup solution (including drives) has come out to about $600. That beats anything I see out there and it looks like I'll be able to depend on it for at least another 3-4 years before I have to upgrade defective drives. Also have used these Sisun units to recover data from defective drives. Very hard to do but if you're patient and use the right software then a hard drive failure doesn't need to lead to a lost of everything you own. Good to keep in mind.Read full review

Shipment was very fast. Easy to set up and insert the hard drive. The fan is a great added feature as well.
