I paid $20 used (perfect condition) for mine, so you get what you pay for. Using my wireless connection, it is a little slow. Cuts out sometimes. Hangs up on Netflix often. When set on 16:9 it could take up to 4 minutes to buffer an episode and even then would often hang up and not play. Changed it to 720 and it steams better but still slower than I would have expected on my network.

I bought this to add Netflix access to my non-HDMI Sony big screen TV. What a disappointment! This is the only Roku model in recent years to have component (1080i RGB) video output in addition to HDMI. A $15-25 aftermarket cable (not available from Roku Canada) is required, but it does correctly output the proper 1080i signal to legacy TVs. Roku stopped XD/S 2100X manufacture in 2011. This model and several others lost Roku support in 2015. That means that its OS CANNOT be updated beyond 3.1 build 1198. After spending several hours with Roku Tech Support I learned you cannot download a new, working version of their Netflix app either - a problem because the original app no longer works. Word to the wise: DON'T RESET THE BOX OR DELETE ANY APPS ALREADY ON IT. They CANNOT BE RESTORED. To be fair, some of the other legacy apps still work - though slowly. The ultimate solution for me was to buy a currently supported $50CAD Roku Express+. I used an HDMI adapter to send video to my TV's DVI port and used composite (red & white) stereo for my TV's sound input. Works fine.Read full review

This is a great little device. It replaced my Sony Blu-Ray disk player as a network streaming tool. The Sony (regardless of multiple firmware updates) had gotten to the point where it was not capable of streaming more than half and hour - and sometimes as frequently as 4-5 minutes) without dropping the stream and popping up a window saying there was a "Network Error", regardless of the source (Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, Slacker etc). The Roku has completely solved that problem and I can finally watch a movie from start to finish without restaring or rebooting the device. The one area that Roku needs to improve is the way they line up all your selections in a line, with lots of unused space on the screen. For example, if I have 64 movies in my Netflix "Instant Queue", and I want to select number 26, I have scroll to the right or left, one movie at a time, until I get to 26. The Sony laid out your selections in a grid that was six or eight wide and deep. So first, I could see a lot more of what I had on the screen; and then, by scrolling down, I was jumping six or eight movies at a time. Much better.Read full review
Roku no longer supports this model and stopped streaming through it. You have to buy a new model. Also, new models do not support audio. So, if you have separate stand alone speakers that you connected to your old XD/S Model 2100X streaming player, you now must use the speakers installed in your TV. Roku has a model called Express year 2018 that is designed to connect with external speakers, but it no longer is available.

I bought this oder Roku box for my bedroom TV, since it is an older digital CRT that is 720P. The Roku XDS still had the Component Video output, while almost all of the newer models are HDMI only. The box works great for my purposes; mainly I watch baseball games on MLBTV there, or movies later at night. This model, because it's older, is a bit slower than my new Roku 3, and the menu system is not very appealing. For the low price I paid and due to the need for disappearing video outputs, this Roku XDS is a perfect purchase for me.
