Very detailed, accurate description of the life of Jim Jones and the move towards the end at Jonestown. I found the life of Jim Jones fascinating; I did not know about his early childhood and youth. As I read, I kept dreading the end because I got to know the people involved and cared about what happened to them. In fact, I felt like I had to read every word to honor those who died. A strange response to the book. I really liked this book; found it historically accurate. However, it is very long and can't be read in a single sitting. If anyone wants to know more about Jones and Jonestown, this is the book to read.
By far the most comprehensive study of Jim Jones and the People's Temple I have ever read. Sources were carefully researched and annotated, and considerable time was taken to maintain the absolute certainty that everything recounted was accurate. It is an ugly and frightening account, and depicts the ultimate destination reached when collectivism, authoritarian socialism and a philosophy of the end justifying the means are literally combined into a lethal brew that took the lives of over 900 people. It also makes the quote over Jones' jungle pulpit all the more hideously poignant in that to forget the past is indeed to be condemned to repeat it. This book is a veritable Heart of Darkness.
